This is the common misconception about meditation that people need to know.

I’m Guy Lawrence, and here’s a common misconception about meditation. I was being interviewed by a journalist once and he said, “Here’s the thing I got about meditation.” He said, “I know people that meditate, but they’re still tools.”

Meaning, they probably don’t act the best version of themselves through the day. It made me laugh and it made me stop and ponder and really think about this for a moment, and my response was this. I said, “The reason is because true meditation is what you do with your eyes open during your day, not necessarily when you actually stop to take time to meditate.”

Being that observer, I started to be able to actually observe your behaviors during the day when the pressure’s on and being able to show up differently as I think where the rubber meets the road and what really matters.

I think the misconception is, is that just the fact that you meditate and it’s automatically going to resolve your problems. I don’t think so. I think the fact that you meditate and you start to be much more consciously aware of who you are, how you’re thinking, and how you’re behaving, starts to transfer into your day and that’s where I truly believe meditation is what you do with your eyes open through the day.

So, the next time you find yourself in a situation and the pressure’s on, before you react, see if you can respond and ask yourself, “Could I behave very differently in this moment right now?” Let me know what you thought in the comments below.
