I’ve been reflecting on how easy it is to stay where we are, even when something deep down is telling us it’s time to move forward. In this solo episode, I explore the idea of taking a leap of faith and why waiting for guarantees might be the very thing keeping us stuck. I also share the story of a close friend who sailed from Curaçao to Australia. It’s an incredible journey, and there’s something about it that really got me thinking about how we approach uncertainty in our own lives.

We can’t control the conditions out at sea, but we can learn to become better sailors. And I think the same applies to life. Through meditation, breathwork and doing our inner work, we can begin to build the trust, awareness and resilience to navigate whatever comes our way. Maybe it’s not about waiting until we feel ready. Maybe it’s about taking that next step and trusting ourselves to figure things out along the way.

Guy:
What if the real reason you’re feeling stuck isn’t because you don’t know where you’re going, but because you’re waiting for a guarantee before you begin? I’ve always said the worst decision of, is actually no decision, which is indecision. And indecision is a choice. One I’ve been pretty good at myself when I reflect back on my life as well. Nobody’s perfect, but what I’ve come to realize through my own life and through this work is that sometimes there are no guarantees, and sometimes a true leap of faith is required. And when we find the courage to take that leap, life can start opening up in some really beautiful and unexpected ways. So today, I want to explore this deeper, I guess, because I think there’s something really important here for all of us. All right, let’s dive in.

Guy:
So how do we take and have the courage for that leap of faith? And normally I find myself, it kinda just brews and gets momentum, and then I just, oh, take that leap of faith. And if you listen to my podcast multiple times, you know, I’m just as terrified as anyone else when I’ve taken leaps of faith. And I, I still reflect upon my life now going, “How the hell did I get here?” And doing what I do and, and being on purpose and, and really loving life. And that’s all come from taking multiple leaps of faith and knowing that there are, within my belief system, that w- we are part of something much greater than just this little self, the big self, and it’s who– which part of ourselves do we choose to identify with and move forward from that vantage point, and that the universe has got our back, supporting us every step of the way if we choose to do so as well, even though it can feel like everything is against us in any given moment.

So that’s what I wanna talk about today. And often, I remember, I think I’ve said that twice. I’ve got my whiteboard here, haven’t pulled it out in a couple of weeks. So it’s almost like you’ve got this, I once heard, and let’s just draw it here. Look at that drawing. The river of change, and quite often we wanna go from here to, to B, but we’ve got a, and this here is the, the, the ocean of change, if you like. And we can say unknown. One of the biggest fears of humans is the unknown. And we’ll make shit up and put it in there so we don’t sit and stay in the unknown. And in fact, though, in the unknown is where all possibility, uh, exists as far as that, ’cause if you’re in the known and you would keep doing the known, then you’re limiting any possibility for anything future in your life.

And what I g- I’m gonna draw a nice little star here, and I always kind of up here, uh, my North Star. And my North Star is my guiding light and something, uh, that gives me purpose. And I th- I believe I did a podcast on purpose, which I’m sure the boys can link to and even point to. I think even YouTube allows you to click on it, but stay with this episode. Anyway, um, about that, and quite often ’cause we don’t f- know or we’re not clear on our purpose, we don’t do anything about it, we end up being stuck, and we keep going back into the known, and we keep going round and round and round. And what I look at then is you could say there’s a boat here Like my boat.

Okay. And then here is the shoreline Here. And we are here on the shore, and the boat is tied to the shore. And we have to… We can stare at that boat with… And for me, it, all that represents all this possibility, but the challenge is, it’s like you’re seeking new land, isn’t it? That’s over here somewhere over this B section on the other side of the whiteboard. But you have no idea what’s between there and here on that journey, and it’s how do you get there? And it’s, and, and you know you have to get in the boat and w- untie the sh- the, the line and actually leave the shore, and leave the shore. And as you leave the shore, you are then… Untying the rope is like the leap of faith, and you’re watching your old life fr- from a distance s- just drifting away, out, out, and, and now you’re setting sail.

And who knows what conditions are gonna be thrown up. Who knows how big the waves are gonna be. Who knows what storms, what rains are gonna happen, or smooth sailing, and you’ve just got the wind breeze blowing behind your back. And one of my, my, one of my, um, well he was my best man at my wedding. I can’t remember if I talked about this in a podcast before. He was a, he’s a professional sailor. He’s really good. Like, he’s done the, you know, the Sydney to Hobart race. He’s sailed his whole entire life, and he just loves it, loves it. I’ve been on a boat with him a few times, and I am not a sailor, okay? So this is for demonstration purposes only. But he went sailing, and he purchased a boat in Curaçao.

Now, Curaçao is a little Dutch island off the coast of Colombia, I believe. And then he, he, um, ended up re-refurbishing this beautiful sailing boat, and he sailed it back to Australia. Now that’s a freaking long way. And he, he spent a long time preparing for it, mapping it out hows to do it, and he had to leave Curaçao before the, uh, before the, um, tornado season, you know, hurricane season came in and, and everything changed. But because his boat was taking him longer than he thought to refurbish, he ended up being the last boat to leave over those coming weeks during that cyclone season. And, and it was pretty rough getting out of there, I believe. And I’m like, “Dude, you braver man than me. Phwoar.” Right? But when he did that, he backed his skills.

So in all that uncertainty, he was completely equipped to deal with it. And even though he felt like he was taking a r- you know, from us, you just think he’s a lunatic. But from his point of view, he’s got all the capability and all the skills to navigate that ocean, right? And then he got to a point where he said, “Guy, I got to the point where I’m…” I can’t remember what the, the correct term was, uh, what it was, uh, what it is, but he was, uh, um, the furthest point from land in any direction, which is nuts when you think about that out in the ocean. And the other thing was, was that there was a three-day sailing period that if anything went wrong on that boat, nobody was coming to get him Because he, he’s so remote from that.

And I was like, “Holy moly.” I was like, “Well, what do you do? How did that feel?” He’s just like, “You just gotta get on with it.” Just of the leap of faith, right? So it always stuck with me, these, these sailing analogies. Even the shaman I saw nearly 15 years ago talked, talked to me about this, this journey of a boat. So it, it’s always been in there. Anyway, uh, let’s, let’s pull it back to why is all this relevant to here? So whenever I’m, uh, having to take a leap of faith and pull the trigger on something and really lean in to continue into this unknown because it’s, it’s the, it’s the stories, it’s the stuff we put in the way, it’s all the perpetuation and the looping that’s keeping us stuck into the old self.

So I al- I always thought about this, and for me then, it’s the sailing is the, the tools that we are learning to cross the river of change. So instead of waiting for the, the, the perfect day, the perfect conditions to be set up, we, we generally never take the f- the step. The key is to just start walking, take the step, start moving, start sailing. And you can set yourself up. You don’t have to be out in these extreme conditions at first, even when you’re sailing, right? You can start to sail, and you can stay in the boundaries of the headlands and, and not go out into the open ocean yet. So for me then, the sailing, so the leap of faith is untying the rope and knowing you’ve let go.

You’ve already now set your intention to the universe, ” “I’m all in.” “I’m doing this.” “Let’s go.” But at the same time, the key is, is to ensure that you have a nervous system and a capability and a capacity to start to hold that charge of what is being brought to you as you set sail, as you start to do that, as you start to move forward. And that only comes from leaning into the teachings and the work and the meditations, the breathing practices, the, the, the movements, the connection, the gratitude, the things that we talk about here, the energy and healing work, the c- the clearing of the energy fields within ourselves, the traumas, the things that we come up against ourselves.

It’s like we start leaning in as opposed to backing away from it. And from that then, what we’re actually doing, we’re starting to master us, our little boat in our little world, so that w- even though we can feel so small in such a vast ocean, in such a vast place in time, we are now setting sail. And the key is, with all of this, is to become the master sailor in our life. So every day, and, uh, as I continue to just cultivate, explore, and be, the, the, the, the ocean is offering, the, the universe, the planet is offering us opportunities to improve our sailing skills of life. And whether I’m out in a big ocean or whether I’m on a nice smooth lake, I’m constantly just day by day, bit by bit, looking at my life and nurturing my ability to become better s- better sailor.

C– And all of a sudden, what can be terrifying for most is now actually becoming liberating, adventurous, and freeing because we are now backing ourselves. We now are confident within ourselves to really let go, surrender into the moment, becoming more present with what is, and moving towards our North Star, knowing that somewhere out there, that land will appear for us, for the, what we’re moving to. And don’t wait to get clear on this. Actually just start focusing on becoming a better sailor instead. That will help remove the indecision. That will help remove feeling stuck and the overwhelm, and make that your purpose. Make that the connection to divine more meaningful, more purposeful. And through that cultivation of that practice, the way, Daniel-san, will appear, and it does.

And it becomes more and more beautiful, and all of a sudden, these big rolling waves that used to terrify you before just feel, they feel okay now. I can manage this. I can do this. So with that in mind, what have I got written down over here? Where in your life are you still standing on the shoreline, waiting for the conditions to be perfect? And what would happen if instead of waiting for the ocean to calm down or for all the conditions to be perfect, you started just learning how to sail? Get going. I believe the universe loves motion, loves growth, right? Don’t, don’t become a stagnant rock. You’ll gather moss. Anyway, I had to get that out. Wanted to share that with you. If you wanna find out what I’m up to, of course, if you wanna continue becoming your own master sailor, we can support you. I can support you.

Uh, links are below. I’ve opened up the, uh, healing sessions that I’m doing for small groups online, virtual. Time zones. We’ll meet the US, we’ll meet Australia, New Zealand, Europe. Uh, I’m opening them up in November. Come and join me. Book a spot. Retreats next year. It’s all happening. And, uh, Australia, New Zealand, we’re running a, a New Zealand retreat for… No time for the… No time to rest. Keep the sailing up. Anyway, much love from me. Uh, I hope you got something out of that, and I’ll speak to you soon.

I’m standing here right now in Lake Taupo in a beautiful retreat space, and there’s a vast difference between an intellectual experience and passive listening to a fully embodied lived experience, ’cause that’s what retreats can do. They can help you land, start to truly reconnect to yourself, to others, to nature, and to spirit as well. There’s so much in it. That’s why we created Live in Flow, and that’s why we are so passionate about getting this work out there and bringing people together.
